Letter from Burt White

Continued concern over the debt burden of the developed world combined with the deeply divided political landscape in Washington, D.C. has many investors questioning the sustainability of the economic recovery following the Great Recession of 2008. Growth has slowed and we believe the chance of revisiting a recession has increased to approximately 35%. However, the most likely scenario remains that global growth will continue at its modest pace, which could offer an upside surprise for an increasingly bearish-biased market. Read more…

The market finds bottom, at least for now.

It is day three of the GenWealth Financial Advisors trip to Chicago, and what an eventful trip it has been. We have a lot to share with you over the coming weeks, but we wanted to take the time to update you on the market and what we are hearing from the top investment strategists at LPL Financial Research. As John stated this morning in a live interview from Chicago on 103.7 the Buzz, this is not a bear market that has been driven by economic fundamentals. Important Market Update

Hello from Chicago, site of the LPL Focus 2011 conference. Janet, Matt and I are staying on top of the happenings in the markets, and have been in meetings with LPL Research people today in light of the downgrade of US debt by Standard and Poors on Friday. As we anticipated, market reacted negatively and continue to do so as of this writing at just after lunch on Monday. While no one likes to see the wild fluctuations in values like we have seen in recent days, it is good to know that we have structured your portfolios, especially through the income for life model, for times such as these. Burt White - August Letter

The first few days of August for the stock market have represented a rapid flight from risk. The third-quarter bounce for the economy, driven by the tight consensus of investors three weeks ago, has now been completely rejected by the capital markets which have turned lower, despite the fact that earnings remain robust for Corporate America. The market has also ignored several recent, solid assessments of the economy, especially the recently released employment report, which showed a welcomed gain of 154,000 jobs being created in the private sector for July. The uncertainty of the European debt crisis and intense debate on the U.S. debt ceiling precludes any material hope of fiscal or monetary stimulus before the next election. This lack of policy actions has increased the perceived risk in the markets that is causing investors to flee. In a sense, “all news has been bad news” as of late. Read more…
